A Christmas Poem……

A time of year I love
To enjoy ‘The Holly and the Ivy’
Amidst the ‘Bleak Mid Winter’
When darkness dominates the day

When ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’
And bring calmness to the chaos around
When a ‘Silent Night’
Is all that I seek

I hope to bring
‘Joy to the world’
To family and friends alike
So everyone can sing this ‘Christmas Carol’

‘Deck the Halls’
And ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’
And ‘Have yourselves a Very Merry Christmas’
Singing ‘Tidings of comfort and Joy’

So ‘Come rest ye merry gentlemen’
Feel blessed this time of year
And let me and my family
And Billy, of course

Wish you all
A Happy Christmas
And see you in the New Year…

About wendy7713

On the 31st July 2014 I was diagnosed with Young Onset Dementia. I may not have much of a short term memory anymore but that date is one I’ll never forget. I’m 58 years young, live happily alone in Yorkshire, have 2 daughters and I’m currently still in full time employment in the NHS. However, I’m now in the process of taking early retirement to give me a chance of enjoying life while I’m still me. I've started this blog to allow me, in the first instance, to write all my thoughts before they’re lost. If anyone chooses to follow my ramblings it will serve as a way of raising awareness on the lack of research into Alzheimer's. It will hopefully convey the helplessness of those diagnosed with dementia, as there is no cure – the end is inevitable. However, I’m also hoping I can convey that, although we've been diagnosed, people like me still have a substantial contribution to make; we still have a sense of humour; we sill have feelings. I’m hoping to show the reality of trying to cope on a day to day basis with the ever-changing environment that dementia throws at those diagnosed with the condition. What I want is not sympathy. What I want is simply to raise awareness.

  1. Merry Christmas to you Wendy. Thank you for opening my eyes to your world, it has helped me understand what my mom is dealing with as her Alzheimer’s progresses.

  3. Lovely poem Wendy – really pleased I found your book and the insight it gives to those of us experiencing dealing with loved ones with dementia. An ex-colleague of mine with early onset dementia has been part of “The restaurant that makes mistakes” in Bristol – really looking forward to seeing that on Channel 4 in the New Year. https://www.cplproductions.co.uk/production/the-restaurant-that-makes-mistakes/

  5. Thanks Wendy for your thought-full support over the year. Have a joyful family Christmas and let’s all look forward to the future with the ‘positivity’ that you feed to us through your words and ‘enthusiasms!’ (Not sure there is such a word but seems to fit your life-style!)
