They’ve changed the bus timetable………..

May 8th was a date many of us in the village were dreading…….and why?……..it was the dreaded bus timetable change day😱

Not only did they change the times of the buses……but also the number……and the route……and many of the drivers……..quadruple whammy🤯

I must have been elsewhere and in the safe confines of a taxi on day one, but the day eventually arrived when I had to join in the new village game of ‘guess the time of the bus’……

Now I must confess to having the aid of technology in my case……..as every time I looked at the new time-table my head scrambled………the new technology was a new app in the form of the ‘bus tracker’………..😇
Said ‘bus tracker’ follows the bus in real time…..and counts down the minutes to when it will arrive at my bus stop……there’s nothing to work out as there is only one bus due ever…..

On this occasion I waited for the count down to get to 8 minutes and then sauntered out of my house to the bus stop, only to find a crowd of villagers milling round in a daze and complaining vociferously at not knowing when the new bus was due…..
“Even though it say 25 past it’s late already!”, complained one regular……

As I joined, the bus suitably turned the corner into the village and everyone was suitably impressed with my timing🤐……..Now at this point I did try to tell them it was due to the new app; I even tried to show them that it was saying ‘Due Now’…….but it fell on deaf ears and I’m convinced everyone thought I was making it up😂🤣😂……….except one youngster who had also just joined the queue……….who turned and smiled at me…………😂

As soon as the bus pulled up and everyone was seated, it became apparent why the bus was late………the bus driver was also NEW to the NEW route and was relying on the passengers telling him which way to go😳…………because as we got to the traffic lights out of the village, there was a chorus of….

“Straight on” from those already on the bus and much hilarity……..

Once this dawned on the villagers, you could almost see the wicked glint in their eyes as someone whispered….
“anyone fancy a day at the seaside”😜🤣😂🤣😂🤣

The driver was playing along with the antics and kept asking for instructions all the way to town, even when he was probably on familiar ground. It must have made for an entertaining journey for him too.

However…..those that arrive must be taken back……and so proceeded the task of getting the bus back……you’re probably asking yourself, ‘Why didn’t I use the app again….well the app back shows all the buses due at the bus station so would be mega confusing……..

I resigned myself to turning up at the little bus station and simply waiting. The boards which tell you when the buses are due hadn’t been changed to the new timetable ….helpful….NOT………but that in itself gave people something to moan about as a starter for 10…..our new bus number suddenly appeared but at the same time, a bus that was very similar in number to our old one, arrived in the bay next door……this is when the return chaos started🤢

The queue split and some started to board, what was, the wrong bus……..and the rest of us looked confused and some started, cautiously, to board the correct new numbered bus…………I decided to stay sitting and I’d get on the bus the majority had gone for🤯

But one smart cookie, about 80 and a regular, saw what was happening, went over to the wrong bus and told everyone to get off and get on the right one…..Everyone piled off and I’m convinced that even those who were on the right bus did as they were told and got onto our bus, for fear of getting told off…….🤯🤯😶😐🤐

It was then that I felt safe enough to choose said bus and we all trundled home…….I’m still convinced there were a few for whom this was a ‘scenic route’ home instead of a direct route……..🙄

I’m sure I’ll get use to it or maybe I should rephrase that……I HOPE I get use to it……..

About wendy7713

On the 31st July 2014 I was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. I may not have much of a short term memory anymore but that date is one I’ll never forget. I’m 58 years young, live happily alone in Yorkshire, have 2 daughters and I’m currently still in full time employment in the NHS. However, I’m now in the process of taking early retirement to give me a chance of enjoying life while I’m still me. I've started this blog to allow me, in the first instance, to write all my thoughts before they’re lost. If anyone chooses to follow my ramblings it will serve as a way of raising awareness on the lack of research into Alzheimer's. It will hopefully convey the helplessness of those diagnosed with dementia, as there is no cure – the end is inevitable. However, I’m also hoping I can convey that, although we've been diagnosed, people like me still have a substantial contribution to make; we still have a sense of humour; we sill have feelings. I’m hoping to show the reality of trying to cope on a day to day basis with the ever-changing environment that dementia throws at those diagnosed with the condition. What I want is not sympathy. What I want is simply to raise awareness.

  1. Thank you for your wonderful description of the bus drama and the other passengers. Nice to see people keeping (mostly) calm and carrying on with humour in a trying situation. You had me chuckling and wishing I’d been there. Bless you.

  3. I’m sure you will get used to it Wendy, with everything you have to contend with this should be a breeze 🙂 But it would have been funny if the “Regular 80 year old” had left the others on the wrong bus…….just for fun 🙂 🙂
    Happy travels…….on your New bus

  5. You have made me chuckle, Wendy; I can picture the whole thing just as you describe it 😀 But of course there is a serious side – I hope the new timetable settled down … and DOESN’T get changed again any time soon! 😱
